PASTELI IN HISTORY

Since the times of Herodotus – who was the first historian of mankind mentioning it [History C (Thaleia) § 48] – pasteli has been considered as an invigorative and energetic sweet. In her book called "The nutrition of the Ancient Greeks according to the Ancient Comedy Writers" (Athens, 1984, page 46), Mrs. Aspasia Miha – Lambaki explains that "sesamis" or "sesami" was different from "sisamounda" because it was only made with honey and sesame «Δια το πολύγονον, ως φύσι Μένανδρος».

We have little information on the Byzantine era. "The sisamous was the product that today we call pasteli", explains Faidon Koukoules, in his famous work "The Life and Civilization of the Byzantines" (volume 5th, Annex page 134).
